Sensei Kevin Skoien, Chief Instructor
Mr. Kevin Skoien has been studying Martial Arts for nearly 15 years.  His primary martial arts training includes: Okinawan Shuri-Ryu Karate, Kodokan Judo, several different schools of Okinawan weapons (Kobudo), and Japanese Sword.  In addition to these, he has also trained in Filipino empty hand defense, three different Chinese arts, and the Israeli Commando system, Haganah.   He holds black belt ranking in Karate and Kobudo, as well as a purple belt rank in Judo.  He is a seven time National Martial Arts Tournament Champion, with titles in Karate, Weapons and Breaking.  

Mr. Skoien has trained almost exclusively in Peoria, Illinois with Shihan Joseph Walker, Chief Instructor of Shuri-Ryu Karate .  Sensei Skoien trained with Shihan Walker for nearly 15 years, and hopes to carry on his tradition of excellence in Martial Arts Instruction. He has also trained with Hanshi Robert Bowles, the head of the Shuri-Ryu Karate system. In addition, Sensei Skoien has attended numerous seminars with Karate legends Joe Lewis and Fumio Demura.

Mr. Skoien began teaching Martial Arts classes in 1996, as an instructor with Peoria’s (Illinois) Academy of Okinawan Karate. In 1998, he opened the Academy’s first satellite school in Eureka, Illinois.  In 2005, the Academy opened a second, larger satellite school in Morton, Illinois, again with Mr. Skoien at the helm.  

He ran that school until 2007, when he moved to Gurnee, Illinois.  

Mr. Skoien earned a B.A. in Education from Western Illinois University in 1989 and taught professionally in public schools for 5 years. He is originally from Plainfield, Illinois.
